Quiz: Is It Overreach?

How well do you know Massachusetts homeschooling regulations? Take our quiz: “Is it Overreach?” to find out.

Homeschool reporting in Massachusetts is governed by case law. In the court decision known as Charles the judge laid out the standard for what districts can and can't require of homeschooling parents. This quick ten-question quiz tests your knowledge of the law. For each scenario, you will be asked to choose one of three options:

  1. Yes, this is okay. The law says your district can ask you for this.
  2. No, the law indicates that your district cannot ask for this.
  3. Maybe, it's a gray area.

Because homeschooling regulations in Massachusetts are based on case law, there are a lot of “grey areas.” Basically, if a question has not come before a court, we don't have a clear answer to it. What is clear is that anything districts ask beyond what the law prescribes must be “essential.”

After you complete the quiz, you will be able to see your score with brief explanations for each question and links to AHEM articles with fuller explanations. Take the quiz now and test your knowledge.
