Help Getting Started Homeschooling in Massachusetts

We begin to see a spike in new homeschoolers this time of year. Maybe it is building frustration with a school system that doesn't fit your child's needs, maybe it is just the warming weather calling you out of doors. Whatever your reason for homeschooling, the AHEM website has everything you need to get started homeschooling in Massachusetts.

The first step to start officially homeschooling is to submit an education plan to your local school superintendent or school committee. Traditionally, this has been done via a certified letter with return receipt requested sent to your local superintendent's office though many towns will now also accept emailed plans (it doesn't hurt to send it both ways—in any case, get a receipt). If you are withdrawing your child mid-year, you may also want to notify the school that your child won't be returning.

It is important that homeschooling parents know both their rights and their responsibilities. We encourage you to educate yourself on the laws and what they do and don't require. Our mission at AHEM is to provide you with the resources to empower yourself. The resources below will help you get off to a good start on your homeschooling journey. If, after reviewing these pages, you still have questions, we are here to help.
