Connecting
with Elected Officials
How
and Why to Connect with Elected Officials
One
of AHEMs organizational goals is to encourage self-advocacy
and legislative awareness. We strongly urge individual families
to make contact with their local legislators. In developing these
relationships, we will have a base of state legislators to work
with in the event of a legislative challenge to homeschooling.
Teachers' unions and organizations are loud about their opposition
to homeschooling and have powerful lobbyists working for them.
All we have is ourselves.
Making
these connections with officials will put a human face on homeschooling
so that officials can become comfortable with homeschoolers and
dispel any myths or stereotypes they may hold about homeschoolers.
It will also help our cause if they see us as civically active
people in their constituency.
Individuals
can arrange to meet either at the legislators State House
office, or their district office. Or you might like to invite
a legislator to a support group meeting or other gathering. AHEM
has a hand-out available for distribution during these visits.
You can download this document at left. Links to contact information
for legislators and info about the lawmaking process in Massachusetts
are also at left. AHEM is very interested in hearing about individual
legislative visits. Please give us your feedback at info@AHEM.info.
AHEM
sponsors periodic State House field trips throughout the year.
